Navigating Sexuality & Gender Studies: An Introduction

Graduate Summer Seminar

July 16-20, 2018

2134 Allston Way | Berkeley, CA

In this seminar, we will read, talk, and think about the emergence of contemporary sexuality and gender studies in the last quarter of the twentieth century. We will survey central texts in feminist theory and sexuality studies, providing students a basic grasp of its theoretical and practical roots. We will approach this material as serious and worthy of careful attention, helping participants to enter the larger conversation on sex and gender in the contemporary academy. While this seminar welcomes students who have found this academic field a safe haven, it also welcomes students who have found it baffling, disturbing, and deeply challenging to their moral or religious convictions. Seminar readings will engage with recent work on sex and sexuality, questions about gender identity and gender diversity, transgender issues, and the intersection of sex and gender with contemporary concerns over human rights.
