What is "conscience"? When we appeal to conscience, what kind of commitment are we making to the individual over the authority of institutions — including the authority of the state or the authority of a religious group?

Contemporary society provides a range of complicated claims about conscience and authority — and particularly the authority of faith traditions. Conscientious objection is recognized by the state, but historically has been applied inconsistently when it comes to matters of religious conviction. In other cases, conscience can become a site of tension between religious authority and an individual — especially within a faith community. We will try to provide some pathways for navigating such claims and come to a deeper understanding of the relationship between conscience and faith.
