FILM SCREENINGS AND DISCUSSION
What are the contours of faith in God within and outside of a religious tradition? What does commitment to belief look like in an individual life and within community? Does belief preclude doubt, or can belief be strengthened by doubt? Join us for film screenings of “The Tree of Life” (2011) and “Of Gods and Men” (2010) that explore belief amidst uncertainty and tumult in life.

Film screenings are free and open to students, recent graduates and friends. RSVP is requested as snacks will be provided.

The Tree of Life (2011)

Directed by Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life focuses on a family in Texas in the 1950s. The film follows the eldest son, Jack, and his journey through childhood, loss of innocence, and disillusioned adulthood as he attempts to reconcile his relationship with his father. Jack feels at odds with the modern world and seeks answers to the origin of life and the existence of faith.

Of Gods and Men (2010)

Directed by Xavier Beauvois, Of Gods and Men follows a community of eight French monks of The Monastery Notre-Dame de l'Atlas of Tibhirine in 1996 Algeria. Threatened by fundamentalist terrorists during the Algerian civil war, the monks must decide whether to stay in the country or return to France.
