What does it mean to make and protect a space for works of art and to spend time with them in contemplation without concern for any advantage or gain? How does the museum as a space of leisurely contemplation return us to our bodies, dignify us, and lead us to deeper connection with ourselves and with others?
Art historian Cassandra Sciortino will lead us on a tour of one of San Francisco's greatest art museums––the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, an adaption of Paris's 18th-century Palais de la Légion d’Honneur containing 6,000 years of art. Along the way, she’ll discuss 19th-century museum reformers like John Ruskin and how the picture of the intellectual life in our community read—Zena Hitz’s Lost in Thought—can be engaged in the space of the art museum.
